How cash declaration works
Most countries let you carry any amount of cash across the border — but above a set threshold you must declare it to customs. Declaring is free; failing to declare is what gets the cash seized and triggers fines.
- The threshold counts everything combined — banknotes, coins, traveller's cheques, money orders, and often gold and bearer instruments, across all currencies.
- It's per traveller (and a family/group usually can't split to stay under).
- Declaring is not a tax — it's a report. You don't pay anything to declare legitimate funds.
Each country page shows its limit in local currency, what counts, the penalty for non-declaration, and a link to the official customs source.
This is general information for travellers, not legal or tax advice. Thresholds and rules change — always confirm with the destination's customs authority before you travel.
